In Between Places: New Art from Israel is an exhibition of recent contemporary art which questions common expectations of Israel’s artistic production. Beyond the headlines associated with this region, which tend to eclipse its culture, there exists a vibrant art scene informed not only by local imagery and subjects, but by the depths of international interests and art-making practices. In recent years, art from Israel has begun to receive substantial exposure abroad, but there is still a fissure between the remarkable quality of work produced and its global recognition. This exhibition aims to emphasize individual artistic concerns over group readings of the work or definitions of what constitutes “Israeliness”. Although each work reveals its origins in subtle ways, the dynamic and plural output of art in Israel demonstrates that it cannot be grasped in its complexity solely on the grounds of place and identity.
In Between Places is comprised of the work of 15 of Israel’s leading artists, several of whom are exhibiting in New York for the first time, with an emphasis on photography and video and including selected works of painting, sculpture, and drawing. Influenced by both the East and the West, the work deals with shifting landscapes, identity, spirituality, alienation, gender, immigration, personal experience, architecture and culture.
